Every Piece Deserves a Second Story

Hi! My name is Lisa Stephon and I make bags and other useful items from reclaimed fabrics. If you had asked me a few years ago what the chances of me starting my own craft sewing business were, I would have said one in a million. Apparently there was a chance! I started Frankenfabrics in August of 2024 and chose that name as it describes the business in one word. Like Dr. Frankenstein, I create new things from old things.

My first attempt at sewing (many moons ago) was a junior high school home economics project that my mother had to finish for me. I hadn’t touched a sewing machine after that until early 2024 when my daughter asked me to repair something for her. Armed with my mother’s old Singer sewing machine, I watched a bunch of online videos on how to use the machine, then more videos on how do the repair. The repair actually worked and I didn’t hate doing it, so I decided to make an oven mitt, and then a tote bag, and then something else and then I was hooked. I literally learned to sew by watching videos online.

While searching for sewing videos, I came across a woman who makes bags from salvaged upholstery fabric. I’ve always enjoyed recycling and repurposing things so I decided to reuse fabric from clothing and other items that were on their way to the landfill to make my bags. I love all aspects of the transformation process from the hunt for interesting fabrics, to choosing a project and picking the pieces and disassembling and reassembling them. But my favorite thing is seeing people’s reactions when they read the back of my price tags where I handwrite what each item has been made from. People seem to really like that little touch.

I currently sell my items at farmers markets and other events like craft fairs. I’m thrilled that I have some repeat customers and followers on Instagram. I am having a great time learning new skills and being creative. Although I prefer to make things that I enjoy making, commissions are possible.
